I don't know why,but it seems funny.this thread is a discussion board for the three of us only. Where is everyone else?I mean, really with 23 replies?! Lol!
sometimes, unfortunately, in a large site, some of the forums are unused...but this causes a problem because newbies dont understand that there is a whole nother world at this site where the artists live work and post and interact....this is one of those forums where newbies get lost and wait for interaction never realizing they are in a part that doesnt get a lot of interaction...thats why it helps to post the link to show them the way.....
and most conversation takes place in the other threads...so questions many times go unasked unless you visit ~new posts~ and pick up the questons that way.......
As what I learned in my grade school painting you must paint your canvass white first before starting your painting,.
Oil painting has many terms that need to be learned before picking up a brush. Here are terms and tips you need to know.
Value
Value is the graduation of a color from light to dark. By varying the values in a painting you can achieve what is called contrast, or the sharp difference between light and dark. Adding contrast to a painting adds depth and interest.
To see the difference in value in your subject simply put on sunglasses. Your sunglasses will keep you from seeing the actual color, and leave you with just lights and darks.
welcome to AP April...
I disagree about the sunglasses..they will still show color and will show it darker...course depends on your brand of sunglasses and er..cost too...
value really isnt the study of color..
value is the study of dark and light...best way to learn values is to do black and white, sepia or any other monochromatic study...
painting ones canvas white first before beginning, is unnecessary, though the white you might be referring to could be the white that is already on prepared canvases...
that white is called ~Gesso~...usually a few gesso layers sanded in between will be the prepped surface....this keeps the oil paint from seeping into the fabric...
so....gesso yes..most definetly...having to repaint that white before beginning? nawww
